Committees

 Volunteer work is done primarily at the committee level (though there are solo volunteer opportunities available). The organization is guided by two committees, the Program Council, which is responsible for meditation practices, and the Board of Directors, responsible for governance and financial oversight. Other committees oversee the activities within their own purview. Below is a brief description of the committees at KCC:

 

Program Council.

Convened by Resident Lama Michael Conklin. The Program Council supports the Resident Lama in setting opportunities for Dharma instruction and practice at KCC. The Program Council was established in 2002 by Lama Michael Conklin in accordance with the Bylaws of KCC. The Program Council manages all dimensions of activities related to practice and teachings at KCC. Members: Michael Conklin, Julia King Tamang, Bill Spangle, Dora DeCoursey, Kathleen Benz (liaison to the Board).

 

Children’s Program.

A subcommittee of the Program Council, members of the Children’s Program sets the annual curriculum for the children at KCC and ensures qualified teachers are present to instruct them. Contact:  Susan Segur or Kathleen Benz

 

Board of Directors.

The KCC Board of Directors nurtures the mission and vision by setting annual goals, establishing operating policyand monitoring the legal and fiscal health of the organization. It also convenes the annual sangha meeting and the annual leadership retreat. The board generally meets on the third Sunday of every month from 1:30 - 4:30 at KCC; all are welcome to attend. Current board members are Kathleen Benz (President), Steve Parker (Asst President), Ephraim Miller (Treasurer), Pat Parker (Secretary), Jim Kimball, Anthony Kimple and Peter Wood.

 

Finance Committee.

A subcommittee of the Board, the Finance Committee oversees all policies related to the annual budget and finance as well as managing the day-to-day finances of the center. The KCC treasurer and bookkeeper are always committee members. Contact: Bonnie Wilson

 

Volunteer Support Committee.

Nurtures the culture of volunteering at KCC through training, mentoring and facilitation. Annually seeks out individuals with appropriate gifts and skills to serve in the ways needed to carry out KCC's activities. Committee also acts as a liaison between volunteers and the organization.   Contact: Mary Woods

 

Development Committee.

Fundraising & Support for KCC Retreat Center (Ser Chod Osel Ling) is the primary function of this committee.   Connecting with donors through events, our website, written communication and visits to the land are some of our ongoing tasks.   To learn about one-time tasks or ongoing assistance, contact Adele.

 

Retreats /  Events Committee.

This committee is responsible for registration and the logistics of events (including: retreats, study groups, classes, and various events such as visits by eminent teachers, public events, talks, and more) hosted by KCC, whether at KCC, SCOL, or off-site. (The Program Council is responsible for event content and curriculum.) Committee members are: Kay Hartsock, Sherry Bohannan, Patricia Earnest, Julie Hurlocker and Contact: Susan Gladstone.

 

Puja Committee.

Responsible for organizing regular meditation practices. Fosters the Dharma life of KCC by preparing the urban center for puja, providing chant leaders, greeters and handling center setup and cleanup. Contact: Mary Woods

 

Communications.

Develops communication policy and content for KCC publications, both print and digital. The purview of the Communications Committee includes all print and digital material provided by KCC. Communications includes Production and Recording & Archiving. Contact: Kathleen Benz

 

Bookstore.

Responsible for ordering decisions about which books and items are stocked in the KCC bookstore. Coordinates with the Program Council to ensure materials are available to support retreats and classes. Contact: Bill Fenton

 

Scholarship.

Determines how to allocate KCC's scholarship resources to support access to Dharma programs. Contact: Peggy Ensign

 

Building and Grounds.

Oversees repair, cleaning, maintenance and refurbishing of the urban center. Office support manages and stocks paper materials displayed on glass case. Contact: Carol Spears

 

Rural Operations.

Oversees the operations, maintenance, and events at Ser Chö Ösel Ling. Contact: Galen Doucette

 

Land Stewardship.

Responsible for the health and safety of the 240 acres of land at Ser Chö Ösel Ling. Contact: Dora DeCoursey
