Volunteer Support Committee Charter

Adopted in 2003

I. THE VOLUNTEER SUPPORT COMMITTEE WILL NURTURE THE CULTURE OF VOLUNTEERING AT KCC THROUGH MENTORING AND FACILITATION.

A. After the annual staffing process is complete, the VSC will contact the point person for each committee to be certain that a meeting date has been set up.

B. The VSC will engage in an iterative process with the committees to define their job description. A part of this process will be negotiating purview issues.

C. The "point person" for the VSC will meet monthly with the Coordination Committee that will include the point persons for each committee.

D. The VSC will meet monthly and continue to be in contact with each committee once a month.

E. If a committee member should no longer be able to serve during the course of the year, the VSC will attempt to find a replacement.

F. A key aspect of the work of the VSC will be to support transfer of authority and responsibility to the various committees and let them decided how best to get things done. The VSC will be a resource, not an overseer.

II. ANNUALLY THE VSC WILL SEEK OUT INDIVIDUALS WITH APPROPRIATE GIFTS AND SKILLS TO SERVE ON THE COMMITTEES.

A. The VSC has the purview to refine the team structure provided by the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will have final approval of the team structure.

B. In most cases, for the 2003-2004 year, the VSC will encourage experienced volunteers to continue in the jobs they already know well. In subsequent years, volunteers will be offered the chance to move to different roles when possible and desired.

C. Whenever possible, the VSC will recommend only one job per volunteer. Some highly experienced volunteers who carry institutional memory may be asked to play an advisory or resource role for one or more of the committees.

D. As much as possible, The VSC will try to assign a number of members to a committee sufficient to do the work with out additional recruitment. (The primary exception is the committee charged with executing major teaching events, which will involve the entire volunteer base.) If a Committee finds that they need additional help on an on-going basis (as opposed to a one-time basis) the point person for that committee should contact the VSC to discuss needs and identify potential new members.

The commitment we are asking committee members to make is, in most cases, one year.
