Bokar Monastery - Mirik, India

Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling

Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling is located in Mirik, a small village within the district of Darjeeling, in the northeastern Indian state of West Bengal. Mirik is a sacred place for many. Apart from the present monastery, retreat center and Stupa, the great Indian Mahasiddha Maitripa was known to have spent time meditating here. Marpa, the most eminent Tibetan translator and holder of the Mahamudra Lineage, received some of his highest transmissions from Maitripa. Situated at one of the highest points in Mirik, the monastery offer its warm presence to the village and the lake below.

The initial ground-breaking ceremony and laying of the foundation stone was performed by the Most Venerable Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche and the Venerable Bokar Rinpoche in 1984, On the auspicious 15th day (Full Moon) of the 3rd month, in the year of the Fire Tiger (1986), the opening ceremonies and blessings were presided over by H.E. Gyaltsab Rinpoche and the Most Venerable Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche, along with Ven. Bokar Rinpoche, and Khenpo Lodro Donyo Rinpoche. A large body of lamas, monks, patrons, and devotees, connected with the monastery, also gathered to celebrate this significant event.

At present, there are 200 monks at the monastery. Their schedule includes daily practice and a broad range of studies in Buddhist philosophy and Dharma rituals. After the monks have completed their basic studies, they can enter the traditional Three Years, Three Months retreat.


Venerable Bokar Rinpoche and
Ven. Khenpo Lodro Donyo Rinpoche

The founder of Bokar Monastery, Venerable Kyabje Bokar Tulku Rinpoche, died in 2004. Rinpoche was recognized by H.H. the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. From childhood, he dedicated his life to the pursuit and practice of the profound Buddha Dharma. His main teachers were the Most Venerable Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche, Karma Rangjung Kunkhyab, and H.H. the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. Rinpoche spent most of his time overseeing the education of the monks at the monastery and training retreatants here as well as in other retreat centers.

Ven. Khenpo Lodro Donyo Rinpoche, a renowned scholar in the Kagyu Lineage is the Abbot of Bokar Monastery. Khenpo Rinpoche has authored several important works on Buddhism including one on the Kalachakra. Rinpoche offers year round Dharma teachings on selected texts in the Monastery.
